5 Best Pubs in Cambridge

Pubs have gone a long way from being a place to go for a drink with friends. Nowadays, more than serving the best ales, spirits, wines, and other beverages, local pubs offer sumptuous meals and entertainment to their guests.

The city is home to numerous pubs. Some of these have been refurbished to keep up with today’s preferences. Lunches and dinners are perfect reasons to try out the ones in the neighborhood. Or support your team and watch their games in the pub. Here are five of the best pubs to visit:

  1. The Eagle Pub

      Address: 8 Bene’t St., Cambridge CB2 3 QN

This pub is historical, as well as one of the oldest. It was in this pub that scientists Francis Crick and James Watson announced their discovery of DNA. And in World War II, this was a regular haunt of the Royal Air Force airmen. The ceiling is full of graffiti from WW II British and American air troops.

When you visit this pub, try their Eagle’s DNA, the special ale to commemorate the discovery of DNA. And perhaps pair it with the Eagle Burger?

  1. The Mill

Address: 14 Mill Lane, Cambridge CB2 1 RX

If you’re looking for a pub with a riverside view, The Mill should be on your list. They serve cask ales and craft beer. Patrons can enjoy their drinks while looking at the River Cam and Laundress Green.

Guests and friends can also play one of the many board games available. Or take a trip down memory lane and play their vinyl records.

  1. The Free Press

Address: 7 Prospect Row, Cambridge, CB1 1 DU

This is another century-old pub in Cambridge. The Free Press was named after a paper that campaigned against drinking. While the Free Press paper lasted only one publication, the pub continues to operate in the last two centuries.

Guests will be delighted to try their locally sourced produce and evolving seasonal menus. Children can also choose from a menu specially prepared for them. Tour around the pub to see some of their historical items on display, such as the bow of the Cambridge boat destroyed in the 1984 boat race.

  1. The Cambridge Brew House

Address: 1 King Street, Cambridge, CB1 1 LH

Enjoy your ale from the pub’s on-site microbrewery!  While enjoying your drink, look around the place to browse some books or play in the foosball machine.

The Cambridge Brew House can host special events, as well. Choose the Tank Room for a more intimate event, while the Locker Room is more appropriate for a large group.

  1. The Cambridge Blue

Address: 85-87 Gwydir St., Cambridge CB1 2 LG

In summer, the beer garden of Cambridge Blue is the best place to hang out. Right beside the garden is the Mill Road Cemetery, which can be interesting during night time.

The pub serves real ale, pies, and other beverages. They also serve homemade meals such as sausage and mash, fish and chips, and homemade sausage roll.
